A Warning from Yamin Israel
That Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with Mahmoud Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, bodes ill for Israel. It clearly indicates that the Bush administration remains committed to Oslo and Israel’s withdrawal from Judea and Samaria—the position of Prime Minister Olmert despite (1) Abbas’s praise of suicide bombers, and (2) Hamas’ ascendancy in the PA, and (3) the Hamas linkage with Hezbollah.
Furthermore, and as Francisco Gil-White has warned, the unprecedented criticism of Hezbollah by the Arab League, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, is a double-edged sword. While these Sunni Muslim states oppose the ascendancy of Shiite Iran, they also regard Hezbollah’s aggression as untimely, as delaying the further truncation of Israel under Oslo and Olmert’s “convergence plan,” which cannot but facilitate Israel’s ultimate destruction.
There is no reason whatever to doubt that the Arab League, especially Saudi Arabia and Egypt, is committed to Israel’s demise, But these Sunni Muslim states want to have a hand in the kill to heighten their own standing at home and in the Arab world.
