Toward a Serious War Process
Not to minimize the loss of Jewish lives and property, but Israel’s latest round with Hezbollah is a blessing in disguise, for revealed not merely the inept and craven character of Israel’s government. What is even more important in the long run: the war revealed—more clearly than ever, and especially to the United States—that the enemy is not merely “militant Islam” (a tautology) but ISLAM per se.
Stated another way: A lot of American policy-makers and opinion-makers know more clearly than ever that the U.S. is in the midst of World War III, and that the enemy is more dangerous than Nazi Germany.
Since correct identification of the enemy is an obvious precondition of victory, progress was surely made when President George W. Bush used the term “Islamofascists” to describe those who planned to blow up ten airliners flying to the USA.” Only one more step is necessary.
As for Israel, it desperately needs moral clarity. Israel must shun smooth politicians who talk about “reciprocity” as opposed to “unilateralism” when dealing with Muslims. “The term “reciprocity” is foreign to Islamic culture, which is steeped in the ethos of jihad.
We need a government that will let the jihadists know that Israel intends to play a major role in wiping them off the map. Let’s begin doing this by getting leaders committed to a serious war process, not a phony peace process.
