Olmert’s Cease-Fire Policy
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s cease-fire policy is precisely that: Israelis cease while Arabs fire. How are we to understand this absurdity?
I contend that Olmert, in addition to being an idiot, is complicit in murder. His cease-fire policy—it’s also called “self-restraint”—allows Arab terrorists to fire missiles at Jewish communities and kill Jews with impunity. But this touches only the surface of things.
That Olmert remains in power despite his inane and cowardly cease-fire policy is indicative of the bankruptcy of Israel’s political and judicial system. In the United States, this irresponsible, gasbag politician would have been driven from office by an outraged Congress or by impeachment.
The trouble is that that Olmert’s irresponsible policy of “self-restraint” is also manifested in the opposition parties. For example, Likud chairman Benjamin Netanyahu does little more than say the obvious: “Olmert is helping the terrorists.” Why doesn’t this prominent aspirant for Israel’s premiership initiate a Knesset demand for Olmert’s resignation? Why doesn’t he call on Olmert’s cabinet ministers to resign from the government? Why doesn’t he DO something?
Of course, he’s afraid of being accused of self-serving political motives or perhaps of violating the tenets of Israel’s sacrosanct and self-destructive democracy (a democracy that renders the people powerless between elections). Very well, why doesn’t he say, as I said above, that Olmert is complicit in murder? Is Netanyahu’s moderation a virtue when it does nothing to put an end to Olmert’s murderous policy?
Granting that Olmert is a cretin as well as a craven, what shall we say of a system of governance that offers virtually no redress for the sufferings resulting from Olmert’s decrepitude—or should I say his degeneracy?
It seems that the religious anti-Zionists, whatever their own failings, now have it right, that what is called the State of Israel is (or has become) the most dangerous enemy of Judaism and the Jewish people—and by the “state” I mean its governing institutions whose very design perpetuates the rule of irreligious fools and cowards.
