It’s time for substantive dialogue and positive solutions—this is one of the finest presentations you may have seen or heard.

Dear Paul,

I want to share with you some thoughts about my speech at the National Press Club this week.

I used the speech to talk about how our current political system is broken. Stymied by negative attack ads, blind partisanship and 30-second sound-bites, our presidential debates do not allow for serious dialogue. At American Solutions, we believe that real change requires real change. If we are to have real change, and if Americans are to have the types of leaders that we need and deserve, then the presidential candidates must begin talking about solutions to our nation’s problems. Americans must insist upon adult conversations and substantive debates.

In February, former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and I had such a dialogue at the historic Cooper Union. We demonstrated that two adults on opposite sides of the political spectrum can have an informative debate. At the National Press Club this past Tuesday, I challenged the presidential candidates of both parties to commit to similar debates, what we call the “Nine Nineties in Nine” debates. You can read more about the “Nine Nineties in Nine” debates by clicking here.

The video of my speech at the National Press Club is now available at, and you can skip to it directly by clicking here. In my speech, I describe the type of change that American Solutions wishes to implement. It is the type of change that Americans deserve if we are to adequately address the challenges of the 21st century.

I hope you’ll take the time to watch the speech.

Your friend,
